SM Collector

SMS is the most popular data bearer in GSM, which receives the highest percentage out of both usage and total revenues. Apart from person-to-person messaging, a rich variety of value added services are offered via SMS.

Until now, services, which require a reply path for subscribers (like televoting, etc.), have been only offered to the operators’ own subscribers. The main reason lying behind this is mainly the technical limitation, which prohibits other network subscribers to reply to the SMS from competitor networks

These kinds of SMS replies can be collected in two different ways by third party applications:
Through a client connection to SMSC :
Since such applications can be addressed only by the SMSC of the home network with 4 digit client numbers, subscribers of other networks cannot send replies over the SMSC of their network.
By a GSM modem :
Although a global GSM number is available, which enables other network subscribers to send SMS to a specific operator’s SMSC, GSM modems have quite low capacities and also very low performance and therefore they are practically unable to collect bulk SMS.

SM Collector overcomes these technical difficulties and enables the operators to offer SMS based value added services also to other GSM operators’ subscribers by providing a Global GSM number to collect bulk number of SMS. SM Collector acts like a node in the network and is connected to the core network by SS7 links just like an SMSC.

service scenarios
SM Collector provides a Global GSM number rather than a four digit client number; for example like “+90AAAXXXXXXX”. Therefore a subscriber (of any foreign Network Operator) sends a Short Message to this unique number, this message follows the below procedures:
The message is submitted to the SMSC of his own network,
It is delivered to the home network of the SM Collector (to the Gateway MSC of the home network from the subscriber’s home GMSC),
In the home network the message is delivered to the SM Collector from the GMSC over SS7 links.
SM Collector delivers the message to a Value Added Services Platform.
